CLASSICAL SOCIAL #3 - 02/10/2013

"Gung hay fat choy"

CLASSICAL SOCIAL #3

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 10th @ 7PM

(Note the earlier start time!)

FIONN MACCOOL'S, 181 University Avenue

2013, 2001, 1989, 1977, 1965, 1953, 1941, 1929, 1917, 1905, 1893, 1881, 1869, 1857, 1845, 1833, 1821, 1809, 1797, 1785, 1773, 1761, 1749, 1737, 1725, 1713, 1701, 1689, 1677, etc

What do all the above date's have in common? They're all years of the Snake in the Chinese Zodiac.

As the next Classical Social takes place on Chinese New Year and we are entering the year of the water snake, I thought that it would be fun to play music written in snake years, such as Sammartini's String Quintets (1773) or Debussy String Quartet (1893). Then again, we could play music composed by 'serpentine' composers, for example Felix Mendelssohn who was born in 1809 or Canadian composer, Robert Farnon who was born in 1917. We could also play music that has a connection to either snakes or water. Oh no, what have I started!

So far the playlist for Sunday includes:
Mendelssohn's String Octet
Bozza & Ewald Brass Quintets
Music for wind ensemble by Absil, Bozza, Goossens, Lou Harrison, Michael Haydn and Alun Hoddinott.
String music by Chaminade, Jolivet, Borodin and Glass
and music for mixed ensemble by Schubert, Cimarosa and Michael Haydn

I look forward to seeing you all on February 10th for Classical Social #3!
